The role was first played by Pal, a male Collie trained by Rudd Weatherwax, despite the character being female—male Collies were preferred for their striking appearance. Pal and his descendants continued the role in films and the legendary 1954–1973 TV series, which made Lassie a global symbol of loyalty and bravery.
